In response to, "UPUA passes legal services program" (Nov. 13), this is really a good idea. The Carlisle campus of the law school has had a legal services program for the indigent for years. The law students at University Park can be quite an asset to the student body. The biggest problem students' face has been problems with landlords as regards to maintenance and conditions of apartments, and of course, at the end of the lease period, getting a refund of the security deposit.
In many respects, the university is a microcosm of our world. The legal services program will provide assistance for matters regarding civil law. I would suppose that matters such as debt, bankruptcy, contracts, consumer protection, family law possibly including divorce, child custody may be involved. This is going to be a program that will benefit the student body as well as the law students who participate in it as interns working under the supervision of a staff attorney.
