Theater to host films, blood drive for holiday

Classic horror films will be shown at the State Theatre in conjunction with a Red Cross blood drive for Friday’s holiday.

The State Theatre is celebrating this Halloween season with two events that could leave people both thrilled and woozy.

A Halloween film series, beginning at 4 this afternoon at the State Theatre, will be combined with a blood drive on Friday.

The series, which continues through Friday, will feature six classic horror movies.

The cost for each film is $3 for University Park students courtesy of the Students Programming Association.

Regular tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students and seniors.

The accompanying blood drive will take place at 1 p.m. Friday.

"Maybe this [event] is what I'll make my Halloween all about this year," Suraj Sharma (junior-economics) said.

This evening, the State Theatre will screen Teen Wolf, Alien and Friday the 13th.

Tomorrow, the films An American Werewolf in London and Poltergeist will precede a midnight showing of Stanley Kubrick's The Shining.

Some of the films showing are more mild and family-friendly, like Teen Wolf or An American Werewolf in London.

Others, like The Shining, are simply not for the faint of heart.

"My favorite scary film would have to be The Shining," Kristy Cyone, marketing director for the State Theatre, said.

"It's the perfect way to cap off Halloween at midnight. It almost seems too perfect," she added.

This event targets those who enjoy frightening films and events during the Halloween season.

"I kind of like getting scared," Kerstin Schlachter (junior-biobehavioral health) said. "I like having that frightening experience and curling up with a pillow."

Movies such as The Shining create that suspenseful experience, Paul Cerula (senior-security risk analysis), said.

"I like [scary movies] because it forces you to feel uncomfortable, to push your emotions to the edge," Cerula said. "The Shining is a good movie because the suspense builds and builds until the end. The movie lets you attach yourself to the victims, and at the end you realize that there is no escape."

Another well-known horror classic, Poltergeist, is about mysterious beings that terrify the Freeling family.

The film showings won't be the only aspect of the events that can give people a thrilling experience.

"This is the first year we've been able to incorporate a blood drive so we're really excited," Cyone said.

Cyone said the American Red Cross said the blood drive will count toward the competition against Michigan State University.

People who still want to participate in the blood drive are more than welcome to sign up online by going to redcrosslife.org and typing in the sponsor code: State Theatre.

A free movie pass will be given to everyone who participates in the blood drive.

Participants are also entered to win a GPS unit and a chance to win a $1,000 gas gift card.
