Crowds erupted into celebration Saturday night after the Nittany Lions' 13-6 win over Ohio State, sending thousands of cheering students into the streets, coughing under a cloud of police pepper spray.
The reaction came after the Lions' first win in 30 years at the Columbus, Ohio stadium.
Crowds began amassing soon after the 11 p.m. conclusion, congregating outside of McLanahan's Student Store, 414 E. College Ave. and the corner of Garner Street and Calder Way.
From there, jubilant students marched down College Avenue and up Locust Lane to Beaver Avenue. Traffic stopped to a near standstill as revelers banged on car hoods and slapped high fives with drivers.
Once on Beaver Avenue, the crowd became rowdier, pulling out bushes, throwing toilet paper rolls and tearing down streetlights and street signs. Police initially pushed students to the sides of the street but began spraying pepper spray as student reaction intensified.
"We realize everyone was happy for a victory, and we let it go on for a while, but people started uprooting shrubbery and knocking down lampposts, and we can't let that go on," said John Gardner, captain of the Patrol Division at the State College Police Department. "The lampposts are carrying a full charge of electricity. Someone could have been electrocuted, and I don't think they think about that."
By 1:30 a.m., police had forced to crowd to dissipate.
