Sex Slaves to break bonds, rock out at Brewery tonight

This weekend, The Brewery will host a Cherry Darling show that emphasizes the "sex" in "sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll."

Sex Slaves, from New York City, will play a special Sunday Cherry Darling show at 9:30 p.m. at the Brewery. Wentletrap, Versus The Ocean, and Midnight Love Ensemble will open the show. Tickets are $8 in advance at The Brewery and City Lights Records and $10 at the door.

The band is a three-piece featuring guitar, bass and drums. Eric "Eric13" Michaels, singer and guitarist for Sex Slaves, said his band has a sound similar to rock bands like Foo Fighters and Green Day.

Michaels said his band got its attention-grabbing name from a true legend in the music industry.

"We had just finished our first rehearsal," Michaels said. "We were at the bar where we always hang out, and George Clinton, of Parliament Funkadelic, came in. The owner introduced us to him, and he said, 'I heard one of your songs. You guys sound like sex slaves.' "

The name stuck, and the band has forged a reputation as a hard-working touring band, playing 300 shows in 18 months and playing in Canada and Japan.

"We've toured so extensively," Michaels said. "We've hit every corner of the country. We're definitely known for our live show."--

Cherry Darling Productions Owner Meredith Rebar said the band has gained some recognition and radio airplay from its constant touring schedule.

The band released Bite Your Tongue in 2005, and one single, "Thank God for Jack Daniel's," quickly defined the band's philosophy.

"It's a very high-energy, crowd-interactive show," Michaels said. "People tend to buy us shots of whiskey, because of that song. For some reason, girls always get in wrestling matches at our shows. Luckily, no one's gotten hurt."

So closely is his band linked to the iconic whiskey, Michaels said Sunday's show would be officially sponsored by Jack Daniel's.

Matt "Wentle" Seprish, from opening band Wentletrap, helped organize Sunday's show and book Sex Slaves. He said his band has been on the State College music scene for more than 13 years.

"We used to play the Crowbar once or twice a month, way back in the day when it was still open," Seprish said.

The original members of the band were all State College residents. The band has endured many lineup changes over the years, but the connection to State College remains. Seprish said the band's current drummer is also a Penn State student.

Seprish said members of one of the other opening bands, Midnight Love Ensemble, should also be familiar to State College music scene regulars because it contains several members of local rock band The Clover. Rebar said the group's hip-hop sound is a departure from The Clover's sound.

"It's meant to be a little goofy, silly and entertaining," Rebar said.
