Homecoming to host band competition
Penn State Homecoming will host the Raise the Song Band Bash at 9 tonight for anyone 18 and older at Candy Bar and Lounge, 129 S. Pugh St. Admission is $3.
Three bands will compete for the title of Band Bash champion and the winning band will be given the opportunity to perform onstage at the 2009 Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon.
Yale faculty member to give lecture
Daphne Fitzpatrick, a faculty member of the sculpture department at Yale University, will give a lecture today in the Palmer Lipcon Auditorium at the Palmer Museum of Art.
The lecture will begin at 2:30 p.m. and is titled "Light as a Feather." The John M. Anderson Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series is sponsoring this event. Admission is free and open to the public.
Police: Concertgoer faces charges
A visitor to State College for the Grateful Dead Concert Monday is facing felony assault charges after striking and spitting at police officers, State College police said.
Douglas F. Miller, 30, of Albany, Ohio, was sitting in front of the women's restroom in the Bryce Jordan Center at about 9:48 p.m. Monday when police asked him to move, according to the complaint. He was charged Tuesday with aggravated assault, simple assault, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, harassment and public drunkenness, according to the complaint.
After repeated requests to move, Miller lunged at an officer and began striking him, according to the complaint. After a confrontation, officers handcuffed Miller and began escorting him to the police command post, according to the complaint. During the escort, Miller spat into the mouth of one of the officers, police said.
Miller was transported to Mount Nittany Medical Center for further evaluation, according to the criminal complaint.
Film series to show French compilation
The second part of the French Film Series will show L'Origine De La Tendresse Et Autres Contes at 7 tonight and 9:15 p.m. Friday in 115 Kern Building.
The six-part series is run by the department of French and Francophone studies.
Presented by the World According to Shorts, L'Origine De La Tendresse Et Autres Contes is a compilation of six short films from varying genres and styles representing the different perspectives of the directors and the French people -- from foundry workers in Brest to Algerian immigrants in Paris.
The showings are free to the public and include subtitles.
