State may ask PSU to return 4 percent of appropriation funds

Penn State could have to return nearly $15 million in state appropriations funding to the state because of decreased state tax revenue, officials said today.

The potential budget cuts could force the university to cut some jobs and consolidate others, university spokeswoman Lisa Powers said today.

"The state is experiencing severe shortfalls in its revenue projection. This is not a surprise right now," Powers said.

Because of the ongoing financial crisis, Pennsylvania's tax revenues are down about $280 million from projected rates for the current fiscal year, said Barry Ciccocioppo, a spokesman in the governor's office.

The state has asked the university to set aside 4.25 percent, or $14.4 million, of its $338 million in appropriations funds this year in case the state needs the money back in the future, Ciccocioppo said.

The university is attempting to cut costs across the board and will try to minimize potential job losses, Powers said.
