LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Genocide, abortion posters don't display a comparison

There was a particular sign at the abortion protest was held outside of the HUB on Monday, Oct. 6 that I do not believe got enough attention. It contained the saying, "Hitler was wrong for killing Jews, and you are wrong for killing babies." First of all, this analogy is completely irrelevant. The simple definition of genocide, "the deliberate and systematic extermination of a national, racial, political, or cultural group," is evidence that these two situations are nothing alike.

This sign was a complete mockery of the Holocaust. Anyone who saw it could tell that the protesters obviously intended it as a shock value publicity stunt. The sign was dark red, with most of the text in black. The only highlighted words and symbols on the sign were the words "Germans," "Jews," and "Hitler," along with the Nazi swastika. The topic of abortion can barely be seen at all.

This sign attracted many students who were angry and upset about the usage of the swastika and the obvious attempt to exploit the genocide of millions to attract the attention of students. Even if the protesters decided to use the analogy, the usage of the swastika was completely unnecessary and added absolutely no merit to the sign other than shock at the display of such a hateful symbol.
