Recital to kick off tuba festival

Kate Wohlman may talk with an English accent, but when she plays her tuba she blends in with everyone else.

Wohlman (graduate-music theory and performance) will perform with several of her peers tonight in a tuba and euphonium recital in Esber Recital Hall. The concert is the first event in a month-long series called "Octubafestival."

"Across the nation, we use the month of October for many tuba and euphonium concerts," said Velvet Brown, the coordinator of tonight's event. "Octubafestival" consists of about 10 events on various dates throughout the month, Brown said.

Students in attendance will be treated to a diverse range of pieces within the spectrum of classical music.

"Everything is classically oriented. [The program includes] Marcello, romantic pieces, one movement of Ralph Vaughan Williams' tuba concerto, an aria by Puccini. ... It really does vary," Brown said.

There will also be original compositions and variations of other pieces performed. An ensemble of about 10 students playing either tuba or euphonium, will perform the musical selections, Brown said.

The tuba's importance and its ability as a solo instrument is important to Wohlman, who has played for 10 years.

"I like the fact that the tuba has such an important role in the ensemble," she said.

Events featuring tubas and euphoniums without a larger ensemble are great for students, Wohlman said.

"It's really a unique chance to hear the tuba in this setting. It's much more versatile than people think," she said.
