Missing D.A.'s hard drive reveals no data

The company that analyzed data from former District Attorney Ray Gricar's hard drive has determined any data on the hard drive is unreadable, current Centre County District Attorney Michael Madeira said.

Madeira said Kroll Ontrack Inc., the Minnesota firm that analyzed the hard drive, could not recover any data because of a combination of water damage and previous attempts to recover data.

In response to what Madeira called "rumors" that Gricar was interested in clearing his hard drive before retiring, Madeira said there is no evidence Gricar tried to wipe the hard drive clean. Madeira said Gricar's girlfriend at the time, Patty Fornicola, remembered seeing "what she thought was a box for that type of program" at the house, but no wipe-drive program was ever recovered.

Gricar disappeared April 15, 2005.

In July 2005, two fishermen found Gricar's county-issued laptop computer -- without its hard drive -- in the Susquehanna River. The hard drive was found in October 2005 about 100 yards from where the laptop was found.

Madeira said investigators will continue to look over old information and any new information that comes in.

"Unfortunately, that is few and far between," he said.
