Trekking to class provides unexpected exercise for students

Though fitness classes like Calorie Killer may inspire students to burn off extra calories, many may be unaware of all the calories they're killing between classes.

"For those who don't get to the gym, it's great knowing you can still burn a lot of calories just by walking to class," Melissa MacFarland, (senior-public relations) said.

For every mile walked the average person will take about 2,000 steps and will walk about four miles an hour, according to About.com.

This is about a 15-minute mile, according to About.com.

Uphill walks and heavy backpacks tend to add a lot of resistance and make walking to class a bit more difficult, MacFarland said. When running late to class people tend to speed up which can add a little resistance as well, she added.

"I would think resistance would burn more calories because it makes walking more difficult," Shane Flickinger, (senior-health policy and administration) said.

Bad weather and tardiness often steer students away from the long walks to class, however, perhaps knowing how many calories are burned students will be motivated to walk, Flickinger said.

"I tend to walk more often instead of taking the bus when I'm looking to get some exercise in," he added.

A walk to Willard building from Pollock Commons and back takes about 1,167 steps and burns more than 70 calories total.

The width of campus -- from Beaver Stadium to Waring Commons -- covers a little more than two miles, so walking to the stadium from West on game days can burn as much as 247 calories.

"There's a lot of walking on campus but it can be beneficial especially if you're looking to lose weight," Flickinger said.

Students can look on their student maps to find similar distances to other locations downtown or around campus.
