Grey's Anatomy charms with drama

The season premiere of ABC's Grey's Anatomy on Thursday night was definitely one not to have been missed.

The show opened with everyone's favorite neurosurgeon, Dr. Derek "McDreamy" Sheppard (Patrick Dempsey), in the ER getting his chest pumped; he assumedly was in some sort of an accident. Jaws were sure to have dropped as he flat-lined; how could they kill off one of the main characters?

Of course, it wasn't really happening. It was just lead character and resident worrier, Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), dreaming. Viewers later discover that Grey has had this same reoccurring dream for months now. One can only wonder what's up with that "can of worms."

As the show progresses, Seattle Grace Hospital learns that they are ranked the 12th best teaching school in the nation. Although to all the doctors at SGH, 12th is not good enough. Chief of surgery, Richard Webber (James Pickens, Jr.) is on a kick throughout the whole show to raise the hospital's rankings; although, he seems to take it too far when he explodes in Grey's face telling her that she and the other residents, "don't know anything."

As if the pressure to raise their status isn't enough, Meredith is faced with another tough decision; should she ask Derek to move in with her or not?

This show never changes. Meredith is always convinced that she is being faced with a difficult life decision while trying to deal with the struggles of being a resident in a hospital that never sleeps.

Grey's Anatomy never ceases to amaze me with some form parallelism within each plot. To make a long story short, one of the patients that comes in has cheated on her husband with her best friend's husband. She is struggling with finding the way to tell her best friend and of course Meredith finds the wisdom to say that she needs to know the truth because that's what best friends do. How ironic that she and Christina Yang (Sandra Oh) are going through a similar struggle. Meredith is having trouble deciding whether to move forward with Derek or not, and Christina doesn't know how or what to say to make Meredith feel better.

Phew. This premiere couldn't be more drama heavy.

Of course, all's well that ends well; the two best friends make up, and Christina is honest with Meredith, explaining that she thinks her "nightmares" mean nothing and she should move in with Derek.

The brunt of the show involves Meredith and Christina's argument, although that's not the only drama going on at Seattle Grace Hospital.

Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) and newest addition to the SGH staff, Erica Hahn (Brooke Smith) start to rekindle their lesbian love affair that left viewers hanging at the end of the last season. By the end of the show, the two consider themselves "virgins" to this dating game and appear to start over.

Wonder what's going to happen there ...

The show closes with another classic Meredith quote, "Once upon a time, happily ever after. The stuff we tell are the stuff of dreams. Fairy tales don't come true. Reality is much stormier, much murkier, much scarier. Reality, it's so much more interesting than living happily ever after."

It's those quotes that get me every time. ABC must have some good writers over there coming up with some of those quotes that keep people wondering week after week.

This was one premiere I'm glad I didn't miss.
