Charges were filed Tuesday against a man who burglarized a Mifflinburg home and then reported to police he was stabbed in downtown State College, according to court documents.
Mark Allen Hannah, 41, of Mifflinburg, is being charged with burglary, criminal trespass and criminal attempt, according to a criminal complaint from Union County District Magistrate Jeff Mensch's office.
Hannah broke into the Mifflinburg residence of Carson Sampsell, 20, between 10 and 11 p.m. Sept. 12, searching for items to steal, according to the complaint. During the burglary, Sampsell and two of his friends arrived at the residence and heard Hannah walking around upstairs, according to the complaint.
According to the complaint, one of Sampsell's friends grabbed a golf club and Sampsell grabbed a knife. He heard Hannah walking down the steps stating "Bill, is that you, Bill?" police said.
According to the complaint, Hannah walked into the kitchen toward the door he used to enter the residence and was struck in and around the neck or face area with a golf club.
Sampsell stabbed Hannah three times in the back area, police said. The complaint states Sampsell claims he stabbed Hannah several more times, although there are no injuries to back up the claim.
Hannah and Sampsell then went outside, where Hannah fell to the ground, police said.
Hannah told Sampsell he was a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agent and told him he was under arrest, police said. Then Hannah fled into the woods and field area behind Sampsell's house, police said.
According to the complaint, several hours after the incident occurred, Hannah and his wife said they drove to State College to help a friend named "Bill" whose vehicle was broken down in the area. They initially reported Hannah was assaulted and stabbed three times from behind while he was walking around looking for his friend, police said.
Police said there was no evidence at the scene and the physical evidence recovered from Hannah was not consistent with what he and his wife reported.
Hannah was transported to the Altoona Hospital to be treated for the stab wounds, according to the complaint.
The complaint states State College Police spoke with Pennsylvania State Police at Milton regarding the incident.
"They had a lot of questions in regards to what was being reported to them and after speaking with [State Police Trooper Philip A. Davis] it was clear the defendant was the person involved in this incident," the complaint reads.
State College Police Cpt. Dana Leonard said Friday that police will charge the man with filing a false report after state police complete their investigation. Leonard could not be reached for comment as of press time Tuesday.
