Link arises in stabbing

Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) at Milton are investigating a connection between a Mifflinburg robbery and a stabbing reported to have occurred in downtown State College, state police said.

According to a press release, Carson Sampsell, 20, of Mifflinburg, arrived home at about 10:15 p.m. Sept. 12 with two of his friends and heard someone in his bedroom. Sampsell got a knife from the kitchen and his friends grabbed golf clubs, police said.

Police said an unknown man came into the kitchen and one of Sampsell's friends struck the man with a golf club, staggering him. Sampsell then jumped on the man's back and attempted to stab him in the back, police said, adding the man then ran out the kitchen door and fled across a field.

Police said the man was a "husky," white, non-Hispanic man, about 6 feet tall, with short, dark hair and wearing dark pants and a red short sleeve shirt with a garbage bag over it.

It was initially reported Sept. 13 a Mifflinburg man said he and his wife arrived in State College at about 11:15 p.m. Sept. 12 to help a friend who had vehicle trouble and needed assistance in a downtown parking lots, police said.

Police said the man told them he later exited his vehicle around the 400 block of East College Avenue and was then attacked somewhere between the 400 block of East College Avenue and the intersection of East Beaver Avenue and Locust Lane.

The man said he was walking when he was hit in the head and stabbed three times, police said.

Police said the man told them he waved down his wife, who drove him to Mount Nittany Medical Center.

"We had the original burglary investigation, and the stabbing was reported to State College the following day," PSP Milton Cpl. Greg Watson said. "I believe it was learned that the two may be related at that point."

Watson said nobody has been charged in connection with either incident, adding he anticipates "some action in the near future."

Watson said there is a possibility the man in the Mifflinburg burglary fled to State College.

"I think you could probably think that way," he said.

In a Sept. 15 news release, police said although circumstances indicated the Mifflinburg man had been stabbed, the incident did not occur in State College or even in Centre County.

State College Police Cpt. Dana Leonard said police will charge the man with filing a false report after state police complete their investigation.
