Holzberg among Lions advancing on Day One of Tournament

The Penn State women's tennis team had a strong showing in its first day of the William & Mary Invitational in Williamsburg, Va., with five Nittany Lions advancing in singles play in their respective flights and a doubles pair reaching the semifinals

Among the winners was Lauren Holzberg, who did not have to face No. 14 Laura Vallverdu of Miami (Fla.) after she was scratched from the competition. Instead Holzberg faced unranked Cami Hubbs of Ohio State and won in three sets to advance in Flight A to face No. 94 Katarina Zoricic of host William & Mary Saturday morning.

Sarah Lotto, Leyla Morzan and Maria Prishlyak also advanced in their respective singles flights, as well as Lauren McCarthy, who advanced by walkover.

McCarthy and Prishlyak also advanced to the doubles semifinals in Flight B by beating Helen Cunningham and Kelly Tidwell of Richmond after winning their first round match. The pair was the only Penn State doubles pair to win matches on Friday. McCarthy and Prishlyak will face Lana Krasnopolsky and Katharine Atwell of Boston College Saturday Morning.
