While organizing books for class, Hayley Roche paused to decide which fitness facility she would be visiting most this year.
"All the fitness facilities are well spread out so everyone has somewhere to go," Roche (elementary education-sophomore) said. "You're never having to look far for somewhere to work out."
Penn State is an active campus and provides some of the best facilities around, Chip Harrison, head strength and conditioning coach said.
"We offer consultations with the training staff to learn how to use equipment or to develop a fitness routine. We encourage people to stay active," Harrison said.
From calorie killer fitness classes to an indoor track and online appointments, students at Penn State can access multiple health and fitness resources, Harrison said. These resources and the new Student Health Center are available on campus, Harrison said.
The White Building
The White Building, located between Atherton and Simmons Halls, features more than 60 cardio machines, strength-training equipment, free weights and an indoor pool, Harrison said. The White Building has the most specialized selection of free weight equipment on campus, Harrison said. The White Building is also known for its wide range of fitness classes including calorie killer, washboard abs and hip-hop aerobics, Harrison said. New classes include club aerobics, which features Carmen Electra's striptease workouts, Harrison said. A list of classes and times for classes at the White Building and other fitness facilities is available online at
www.athletics.psu.edu/fitness/current_schedule.pdf.
McCoy Natatorium
The Natatorium, located on Bigler road, features three indoor swimming pools with a second-floor cardio loft, Harrison said. The cardio loft features 40 pieces of cardio equipment including treadmills, ellipticals, stationary bikes and more, Harrison said. The loft provides a workout environment for cardio lovers, Harrison said.
Multi-Sport Complex
The Multi-Sport Complex, located near the outdoor track and just south of the Bryce Jordan Center, features an indoor track and Astroturf playing field, Harrison said. Though the facility is used frequently by varsity sports teams, it is open for recreational use by Penn State students, Harrison said.
Intramural Building
The IM building, located near East Residence Halls, offers a medium sized facility featuring more than 20 pieces of cardio equipment as well as select and free weights, Harrison said. The building also features an indoor track available to students year round, Harrison said.
University Health Services (UHS)
UHS offers a variety of physical and mental health services including psychological, peer and nutritional counseling, emergency support, a 24-hour advice nurse, routine doctor examinations and on-site prescription refills. Students have the ability to find additional health resources as well as make and cancel appointments online at: www.sa.psu.edu/uhs.
Rec Hall Fitness Center
Rec Hall, located next to West Halls, offers 15,000 square feet of cardio and strength training equipment, Harrison said. As the newest fitness center on campus, Rec Hall features video walls and individual entertainment monitors on each piece of cardio equipment. Rec Hall is open on the weekend as well, Harrison said. For a complete list of all fitness center locations and hours visit www.psu.edu/dept/psustrength/index_rec.html.
