I would like to express my outrage at Daryll Clark being named the starter for Saturday's game in. I feel sorry for Pat Devlin, who was one of the top five quarterbacks in the country in 2006.
He must now think: "Why did I come to Penn State?" Don't get me wrong, I respect Clark as a football player. However, is he really good enough to take us to the promised land of the Bowl Championship Series? He is a good backup and a system quarterback, but will he see passes and opportunity that Devlin can create from the pocket? Clark's gut reaction is to leave the pocket if he sees pressure, while Devlin hangs in the pocket until the last second. Devlin also has the mobility of Clark, he may not be as quick as Clark but is better overall in the quarterback position.
Unfortunately, we have a quarterbacks coach that has never taken a college snap or even high school snap is his life. We all know why he is in the job, don't we? He has destroyed many potential NFL-caliber quarterbacks -- like Zach Mills -- and is destroying another great one in Devlin. People are forgetting the last NFL quarterback we had, was Kerry Collins. That was before the current quarterbacks coach was put in place.
It's a clear negative correlation.
I hope we can have a decent season on the field with Clark pulling the strings, but I do feel for Devlin getting screwed when he should have been a starter half-way through his 2006 season as a true freshman
