Student reports dorm assault

University Police are investigating an indecent assault that reportedly occurred around 4 a.m. Sunday in Brumbaugh Hall, police said Monday.

According to the police report, a student reported she was inappropriately touched by an unknown person in a residence hall room. Penn State Police Lt. Bill Moerschbacher said the alleged female victim and the male in question did not know each other.

Moerschbacher said he did not know whether or not alcohol was involved in the incident, but Penn State spokeswoman Lisa Powers said it is believed the male was under the influence of alcohol.

Moerschbacher also said the investigation continues as to whether there was a break-in, while Powers said it is her understanding the male entered an unlocked room.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the nature of the incident, though Moerschbacher said it does not appear to be a sexual assault.

"You would think it would be apparent right away, but it's not," he said. "At this time, we're going with indecent assault until we finish the investigation."

Moerschbacher added that sexual assault, a felony, involves penetration. There was no penetration in the incident, he said.

Indecent assault is a misdemeanor offense.

There are currently no leads on suspects, Moerschbacher said. Police are "looking at a lot of things and talking to a lot of people," he added.

"I can't say specifically who we spoke to, but we'll be doing a lot of things to identify a suspect, and we're talking to anyone who may have seen him," he said. "It could be people on the floor, people in the building or people who were seen going into an adjacent building around that time. We're going to look at every angle we can to figure out who this person is."

At least three other incidents involving assault or sexual assault have been reported on campus since this spring, police have said.

On Aug. 14, a student reported to university police that an unknown male attempted to assault her while in a Pollock Halls dorm, police said.

Police have also said they're investigating a possible sexual assault in Pollock Halls, reported to have happened on Aug. 6.

In a separate incident in April, police said 19-year-old Gary Brian Patterson, of Carnegie, engaged in sexual intercourse with a woman without her consent in Redifer Commons. A juvenile was also charged in connection with the incident.

Powers said she would not group all of the incidents together because all of the details surrounding the incidents are not yet known.

"This [latest incident] in particular seems to be random in nature," she said.

Although Powers said she has not heard any concerns from students, she advises students to lock their doors as a safety measure.

"I know that the beginning of the semester is always a time when police increase their vigilance," she said. "And individuals should increase their vigilance."
