Soccer squanders late game lead

In each of its two scrimmages, the Penn State men's soccer team outshot its opponent by at least 10 shots.

But in each game, the Nittany Lions failed to earn a victory.

Penn State allowed two second-half goals to wrap up its preseason slate with a 2-2 draw against Pittsburgh Saturday at Jeffrey Field.

The Lions outshot the Panthers 12-2, but allowed goals on each of the Panthers shots. The draw came just four days after the Lions posted 15 shots to Marshall's three, but lost 1-0.

Despite the results, coach Barry Gorman wasn't concerned.

"If we weren't outshooting the other team and we weren't getting the chances, then I'd be worried," he said. "But there's a lot of new guys in there, and we'll start to jell together."

Penn State junior Matheus Braga opened the scoring 15 minutes into the match with a chip shot from 20 yards out.

It was Braga's first goal for the Lions, after coming from Brazil to play soccer at Penn State. He also led the Lions in shots and shots on goal totaling five and four, respectively.

"Braga's an exciting player," Gorman said. "So he's gonna score exciting goals like that."

Seventeen minutes after Braga's goal, Corey Hertzog found the back of the net when fellow freshman MacKenzie Arment got behind the Panther defense and placed the ball on Hertzog's foot with a pass across the six-yard box.

"We played some great soccer in the first half," Hertzog said. "Now we just need to go to the practice field and put it together before the season."

Hertzog's goal came just seconds after he had been stopped from eight yards out on the right side of the box.

The Lions finished the half with nine shots on goal, while the Panthers couldn't muster one.

"We didn't give up many chances," senior defender Andy Machi said. "I was real proud of our first-half performance."

The only low point of the half came ten minutes in when junior forward Vincent Salvatico left the game with a sprained medial collateral ligament (MCL). Gorman said he was uncertain of Salvatico's status and would have to wait for an evaluation from the doctors before knowing for sure.

The tone of the game shifted in the second half, when Gorman decided to rest many of his starters.

Pitt drew one goal back in the 59th minute when midfielder Matt Baker controlled a cross from Justin Boehm and slotted the ball into the top right corner.

With five minutes remaining, Pitt equalized after Penn State goalie Warren Gross attempted to clear but kicked the ball into the back of Pitt forward E.J. McCormick.

McCormick ended up with Gross behind him and the ball at his feet. He coolly tapped it into an open net to even the score.

"We're playing well at points but then we give up these shots and it's frustrating," Machi said. "We just have to keep battling and hopefully next Friday we can keep the shots off the board and keep the goals off the board as well."
