'Pandas' head to Zeno's

Giant Pandas and the people who love them will descend upon Zeno's Pub tomorrow night.

The Rochester, N.Y.-based reggae group Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad will play three sets starting at 10 p.m. at Zeno's Pub, 100 W. College Ave. Entrance to the 21 and older show costs $5.

The band, which consists of Aaron Lipp, Rachel Orke, Dylan Savage, James Searl and brothers Matt and Chris O'Brian, has played Zeno's 20 or 30 times by drummer Chris O'Brian's estimation.

Giant Panda plays reggae music, but Chris O'Brian encourages people to give them a chance before judging them.

Chris O'Brian said he believes the band has earned the respect of a lot of music fans that wouldn't call themselves reggae fans.

"Some people say they don't like reggae, but that really means nine times out of 10 they don't like UB40," he said referring to the band that sings "Red, Red Wine."

Chris O'Brian was attracted to reggae music because of the range of emotions it evokes in him and in his audience.

Energetic shows and good original music differentiate his band from others, Chris O'Brian said.

The O'Brians and Searl grew up together in Rochester and have been playing together for more than 10 years, Chris O'Brian said. They met the other members of the band in their hometown and have been together since 2001.

Their name is an attention-getter, but it wasn't the band's first choice.

"We were having originality issues," Chris O'Brian said, because early in the band's history it chose a series of names that were taken by other bands. The current name is a reference to a Tom Robbins novel called "Another Roadside Attraction" in which a musical group is called the Giant Panda Gypsy Blues Band.

The band, which tours the entire country, played 180 shows in 2007 and is booked until November or December, O'Brian said.

The band's State College fans are loyal to it, Zeno's bartender Dave Palmer said.

"I think they have a good sound ... there's a portion of the State College populace that gets really into that," he said.
