Police investigating downtown burglaries

Two burglaries -- each netting almost $3,000 in stolen goods -- hit downtown apartments overnight between Tuesday and yesterday, the State College Police Department said.

State College Police Lt. John Wilson said the two incidents were not necessarily connected, but police are investigating all possibilities because of the burglaries' similarities.

The burglarized apartments are about one mile apart from one another. They occurred at 238 E. College Ave. and at 623 W. College Ave., police said. In one of the burglaries, an unknown person entered an apartment at 623 W. College Ave., through an unlocked fire escape door sometime between Tuesday and yesterday, police said.

The individual entered two bedrooms in the apartment and stole about $2,800 worth of electronics before exiting the apartment, police said. The incident was reported at 9:18 a.m. yesterday. There are no suspects in this incident, police said.

In another incident, an unknown person "broke into" an apartment at 238 E. College Ave., and stole a 32-inch Philips LCD TV, an Apple PowerBook and $40 from a wallet, police said. The total value of the stolen items is estimated at $2,840.

Police said they are unsure how the person entered the apartment. However, a sleeping tenant who woke up during the burglary reported he saw his fire escape door close when he woke up to investigate, suggesting the burglar exited through that door, police said.

The tenant did not see the individual and therefore was unable to provide the police with a description.

Police described the victim, who reported the burglary at 4:37 a.m. yesterday, as "college-aged."
