Two Spikes must return to Army

State College outfielder Cole White and catcher Chris Simmons will leave the team this weekend to begin their commitments to the Army.

This comes after the Army revised its policy regarding professional athletes' commitments. White and Simmons are graduates of the United States Military Academy in West Point, N.Y.

Both White and Simmons were on a 60-day leave that expires this weekend.

White will report to West Point on Sunday while Simmons will head to Fort Knox, Ky. tomorrow morning.

Both are in tonight's lineup against Batavia.

White, who has a 17-game hitting streak, is hitting .366 and has been a mainstay at the top of the Spikes lineup.

Simmons has split time at catcher with Josue Peley and Mark Carver. The 41st-round draft pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates this year is hitting .258 with four RBI.

The Spikes will promote a catcher, likely from Bradenton, to replace Simmons. State College manager Brad Fischer said he would know later today who that player is.
