Police: Student facing charges after drunken night in Lasch Football Building

A student is facing various charges after police said he entered the Lasch Football Building on Thursday morning and caused $5,000 worth of damage -- all while wearing a Penn State football helmet.

Daniel J. Costenbader (junior-electrical engineering), who turned 21 today, was arraigned on charges of burglary, criminal trespass, criminal mischief, theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property and public drunkenness before Magisterial District Justice Carmine Prestia, according to court documents. He was released on $50,000 unsecured bail.

Police originally responded to a call from Costenbader, claiming there was a fight in progress at Holuba Hall, but instead discovered a broken window in the Lasch Building upon arrival, according to court documents. While in the building, police said officers saw a man wearing only a pair of jeans and a football helmet. After entering the locker room, Costenbader, of Emmaus, then picked up the what Penn State Police believe is a replica of the Alamo Bowl trophy and put it back down. He then went into a woman's restroom and was taken into custody shortly after, according to court documents.

In police custody, Costenbader admitted to causing the damage and told police the story of his actions at the Lasch Building.

Following a night of drinking at his friend's University Terrace apartment and two downtown bars, Costenbader told police he was on his way back to his Toftrees apartment when he decided to hop the fence onto the football practice field. He told police he stripped to his boxer shorts and began running around the field, hitting tackling dummies. He then saw an open gate and headed toward the Lasch building, according to court documents.

Though Costenbader told police he doesn't remember much about being in the building, he admitted to breaking a glass window as well as being in the locker and weight rooms, according to court documents.

While inside, Costenbader allegedly damaged a window in the training office by throwing weights at it, flipped two tables and two trampolines in the training room and broke a window in the south lobby.

When police entered the building, Costenbader was seen picking up the Alamo Bowl trophy, valued at $2,000, which he then put back down. A stolen equipment bag, valued at $40, was also found near the first broken window and contained eight Nike footballs, valued at $50 each, Nike cleats, valued at $125.
