LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Fixing American oil issues will take time and thought

Perhaps Pete Buonomo, "Americans' oil addiction can't be fueled by drilling" (July 17), is unaware, but he is currently making an investment upon which he will see no return for at least four years: His degree. Based on his own words, it is foolish to pursue a bachelor's, master's or doctorate degree simply because they take several years to see returns.

His argument reinforces the idea that Americans are self-centered individuals who want everything given to them immediately. With the technologies he advocates still being decades away from becoming fully operational, the short-term supply issues remain relevant. Drilling our own resources is a powerful statement for America as well.

I must question why Mr. Buonomo insists on spending so much money on a degree that will not help him get a job for at least four years.
