LETTER TO THE EDITOR

'Frat' is not the right word for Penn State fraternities

This letter is aimed at the Collegian itself and the general public.

The word "frat" is not an acceptable abbreviation for "fraternity" in any forum, especially that of a headline. "Frat" is rife with derogatory sentiments and slanderous undertones. It is disappointing that a newspaper would use a term that has such a slanted meaning when trying to portray a balanced view of events.

Yes, the word is longer and may not fit your headline space just right, but that does not make it acceptable to use a term that is considered offensive to those you are reporting upon.

My plea to the Collegian, and the public at large, is simple: Use the word fraternity when referring to us. We did not pledge "frats," we joined fraternities. We are not "frat boys," but fraternity men. Whatever your opinion may be, we simply ask for the respect to be acknowledged not by some defamatory slang term, but by our proper name.
