Student president meets with official

With the future of former Phi Delta Theta members and their house in question, University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA) President Gavin Keirans continued his effort to support the suspended chapter.

Keirans met with Director of Greek Life and Advancement Roy Baker yesterday to learn more about the situation.

"I try to meet with Dr. Baker every so often just so I can keep up with what's going on with greek life," Keirans said. "Right now the situation with the house is in limbo."

In December, Penn State's chapter of Phi Delta Theta had its charter suspended after violating a dry-house policy. The university gave members a deadline of June 30 to vacate the house, according to Collegian archives.

Baker did not return phone calls by press time yesterday.

However, Keirans said former fraternity members continue to live in the residence at 240 N. Burrowes Road.

Keirans' two major goals are to make sure the house is not demolished and to ensure the university takes proper care of the former members.

"It's really important that the former brothers are given somewhere to live next year," Keirans said. "The housing situation is not the best off-campus at this point."

In 2004, the university planned to purchase the house and convert it into a 0.536 acre "park-like green space" to complement the new Information Sciences and Technology Building, according to Collegian archives.

"It's a historic landmark," Keirans said. "I don't think anything in its place could make up for it."

Keirans said the Phi Delta Theta alumni association still owns the house, but it is a problem the residents are no longer technically greek.

While he supports the former members' attempt to keep the house and reemerge as part of another fraternity, Keirans said he doesn't know if it's a "feasible option."

Former Phi Delta Theta Chapter President Kevin Haslam did not immediately return messages seeking comment.
