D.A. association announces support of Madeira

The Pennsylvania District Attorneys Association (PDAA) announced its support Thursday for the recently criticized investigation into a missing district attorney.

The organization also reiterated its support of Centre County District Attorney Michael Madeira's handling of the case of former Centre County District Attorney Ray Gricar. In April 2005, Gricar left work in his red Mini Cooper and was never heard from again.

"Ray Gricar's case is tough, but it has been handled correctly," read a statement distributed at the PDAA press conference.

On June 3, Montour County District Attorney Bob Buehner sent a letter suggesting additional leads for Madeira to follow, then held a press conference Tuesday when he said the letter received no response. Buehner and former Lock Haven District Attorney Ted McKnight -- both longtime friends of Gricar -- also requested state Attorney General Tom Corbett get involved in the investigation.

However, in the press release, the PDAA states, "Contrary to recent suggestions, the Attorney General is not a 'super prosecutor' who comes in to take over difficult or high profile cases."

Buehner, who said he was asked to attend the press conference by Gricar's nephew Tony Gricar, said he was not discouraged by his colleagues' remarks.

"I have faced murderers, rapists and pedophiles in court and a few pansy DAs in suits don't bother me," he said.

Buehner added that he resigned Tuesday because of the way he feels the Gricar case has been handled.
