After only a year of being open, Cereality has closed its doors for good.
The windows are covered in thick, brown paper and only the colorful sign above the shop at 134 W. College Ave., shows the eatery had once been there.
Because the Cereality in State College wasn't co-branded -- that is, located inside another store -- and stood on its own, it did not do enough business to remain open, said Anne Christenson, public relations manager for Kahala Corp.
Cereality was bought out by Kahala Corp. in 2007, which also owns the popular ice cream chain Cold Stone Creamery and Blimpie, a sandwich shop. After acquiring Cereality, Kahala analyzed the financials of the existing stores and closed the ones that were not doing well, Christenson said.
"We've found that a Cereality store that was not co-branded, that wasn't part of another store, was not viable," she said.
The company is looking at potential stores with which to co-brand. Currently there is a new Cereality open inside a Cold Stone Creamery in Phoenix, Christenson said.
There are currently four Cereality locations nationwide, according to the company's Web site. There are two in Arizona -- one in Phoenix and one in Tempe -- and one in Philadelphia, near the University of Pennsylvania, and another in Santa Cruz, Calif. The store in Phoenix is inside a Coldstone Creamery.
The State College Cereality opened in March of 2007, replacing Immix Wireless, a cellular retail store that moved to a larger space in Nittany Mall, according to Collegian archives.
Cereality offers more than 30 name-brand cereals and 40 toppings, and customers are allowed to make their own creations from the selections. The store also offered hot and cold beverages, including espresso drinks and flavored hot drinks.
Christenson said she was not aware of what would replace the store.
