Championship volleyball teams visit White House

Following years of attending each other's matches and supporting each other, the Penn State men's and women's volleyball teams were finally able to bask in the glory of their national championships together.

Both teams traveled to Washington D.C. on Tuesday to meet President George W. Bush as part of NCAA Champions Day. President Bush described Penn State's double championships as a rare and memorable achievement to the crowd on the South Lawn.

"It's so appropriate since both the men's and women's teams historically have gotten along so well," men's team head coach Mark Pavlik said of the special moment.

The president met with each of the twenty teams separately where he received a gift and took a picture with each squad. The men's volleyball team presented Bush with a signed Penn State jersey, while the women offered a signed red, white, and blue volleyball.

"I was so glad we got the opportunity to go to the White House," women's team assistant coach Salima Rockwell said. "We're really fortunate. The girls really appreciated it and understood the magnitude of it."

Although the event was meant for acknowledgment, the Nittany Lions were already thinking of what needs to be done to return to the White House.

While waiting for their picture with the President, Rockwell said her players were chatting about how exciting it would be to meet a new president next year.
