Former Penn State wideout charged with DUI

Former Penn State wide receiver Maurice Humphrey, who has had several notable run-ins with the law in the past five years, was charged Monday with a DUI and driving without the proper use of head lights or tail lights, according to court documents.

Humphrey, 24, of 141 Ambleside Court, Port Matilda, was stopped by State College Police at 2:20 a.m. Thursday on the 200 block of West College Avenue after the officer noticed the vehicle's tail lamps were not activated, according to documents.

After unsuccessfully completing a field sobriety test, Humphrey was arrested for DUI and transported to Mount Nittany Medical Center, according to the criminal complaint.

Charges were filed Monday in Centre County District Judge Carmine Prestia's office. According to the complaint, Humphrey's blood alcohol content level was .176 percent, more than double the legal limit to drive in Pennsylvania.

These charges were not Humphrey's first run-in with the law in State College.

In May 2004 Humphrey was convicted of three misdemeanor accounts of simple assault after entering his girlfriend's apartment and assaulting her and her male friend on Nov. 23, 2003, according to Collegian archives. He was sentenced to 90 days in prison, but his time spent in a rehab center for alcohol abuse in Reading allowed him to avoid the time in prison.

Humphrey was expelled from the university in the fall of 2003, but was later allowed to attend class at Penn State Altoona.

Humphrey later violated the terms of his parole when he tried to use a fake identification card at The All-American Rathskeller, 108 S. Pugh St., on Oct. 1, 2004. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to nine months in prison.

One of the Nittany Lions' top receivers in 2003, Humphrey caught 30 passes for 410 yards, placing him second on the team in both categories.

Calls made to an attorney listed as having represented Humphrey in the past were not immediately returned.
