Troubled Bell enrolls at Norfolk St.

Former Penn State wide receiver Chris Bell has enrolled at Norfolk State and is taking summer classes, Norfolk State sports information director Matt Michalec confirmed Friday afternoon.

Bell, originally from Norfolk, Va., was kicked off the Penn State football team in April after police say he threatened a teammate with a knife at the Pollock Dining Commons.

Bell plans on playing football this fall, though his eligibility hasn't been established.

The fifth-ranked wide receiver in the country out of Granby High School, Bell was suspended from the team in February because of academic issues. Then in an April 7 incident, police say Bell pulled an 8-inch cooking knife on teammate Devon Still during a dispute over a cell phone cover, resulting in expulsion from the university.

"I have more knives and a gun up here," police said Bell shouted at his former teammate as coaches separated the two players, according to court documents.

The wideout is facing charges of terroristic threats, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, two counts of disorderly conduct and two counts of harassment. Bell told police he pulled the knife because he feared for his own safety.

In two years at Penn State, Bell caught 12 passes for 209 yards.

"I don't have anything bad to say about Penn State," Bell told the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot earlier this week.. "Being at Penn State, you have to do a lot of things. I think I was only doing about 75 percent of it. I would go to class, do my work, but really I wasn't interested. Because I wasn't interested, I wasn't motivated."
