Activists waive preliminary hearings

Twenty-six of the 31 anti-sweatshop activists charged with defiant trespass after refusing to leave Old Main during an April protest waived their preliminary hearings today, said Landon Evak, one of the protesters.

Evak (sophomore-Spanish and international politics) said the group had no definite plans for future proceedings, but that each person would weigh different legal options before making a decision.

"We're going to discuss the situation," Evak said. "We're trying to do it as soon as possible so we can get back to fighting for workers' rights."

Ben Brewer (senior-Spanish), another protester, said the waiving of the hearings was not an admission of guilt, just that the group wanted to move forward with the proceedings quickly.

The five protesters not present at the courthouse today had scheduled their proceedings for an alternate date, Brewer said.
