Bell waives formal arraignment

Suspended Nittany Lion wide receiver Chris Bell waived his formal arraignment Tuesday for charges related to an incident last month in Pollock Dining Commons.

Bell, who police said threatened teammate Devon Still with an 8-inch cooking knife on April 7 after a dispute over a cell phone case, was suspended from the football team and banned from campus shortly after the incident, according to Collegian archives. Bell was charged with terroristic threats, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, disorderly conduct and two counts of harassment. He was released April 8 under supervised bail.

Centre County District Attorney Michael Madeira said formal arraignments, during which defendants are read their charges and rights and are asked to enter a plea, are generally waived unless a defendant has not obtained a lawyer. In court documents, Anthony DeBoef is listed as representing Bell.

Bell's pretrial conference is scheduled for July 22.
