Though well-intentioned, protest missed the point

I'm astonished that the students supporting the DSP expect a "get out of jail free" pass. Having a peaceful sit-in at Old Main at first seems like a good demonstration of how strong a group feels. But refusing to leave at closing time and expecting no repercussions is irresponsible.

It is not a matter of free speech, but a matter of security of the building and any sensitive materials inside of it. Besides, how effective can a sit-in be if no one of importance is there to witness it?

The consequences of remaining in the building after hours were explained to the students. Despite the warning, some students even volunteered to be arrested first. These students should be aware that actions must be accounted for, no matter what the scenario. I only hope that before graduating and getting into the real world, these students will realize that it is not necessary to get arrested to make a point.
