One might think that a band from Austria would be influenced by the sounds of Austrian natives Mozart or Joseph Haydn.
But for Astpai, a melodic-hardcore band from Austria, they’ll take the sounds of Philadelphia over Mozart any day of the week.
Astpai will be headlining tonight’s Cherry Darling show at The Brewery, 233 E. Beaver Ave. The band is in the middle of its first U.S. tour and thanks to Meredith Rebar, founder and promoter of Cherry Darling Productions, State College will be one of its stops.
Rebar has been recently working with Ante Up Booking, a booking company based out of Union, N.J. The company handles booking for Astpai along with One Win Choice and the Warmingtons — bands who have played Cherry Darling shows in the past. The company contacted Rebar when Astpai began its U.S. tour.
“The Ante Up booking guy e-mailed me and said, ‘You gotta book this band,’ ” Rebar said.
“I listened to them and I was actually blown away. They’re from Austria, but it sounds like they came straight out of Philadelphia.”
Having a Philly sound isn’t that far of a stretch, considering the band is primarily influenced by Kid Dynamite, a late-’90s melodic hardcore band from Philadelphia, along with other bands in the same arena.
“Our main influences are definitely bands from the Philadelphia area and New Jersey and stuff like that,” said Zock Herzog, lead singer and guitarist of Astpai. “All those bands, like Kid Dynamite for example … if they would tour Europe now, they would do so well, because they’re actually pretty big in the whole European hardcore scene. There are so many bands that try to sound like them.”
Fittingly enough, Astpai began its U.S. tour in Philadelphia, where their record label, Jump Start Records, is located. Herzog said he enjoyed touring the city where most of his influences resided.
“It was cool for us because that was like where our influences came from,” Herzog said. “Also, we got to meet some of the bands from the road that are from this area and it’s cool to talk to them and find out what they think about the bands that are our influences.” Herzog was surprised when he found out that One Win Choice, a band currently on tour with Astpai, got to play shows with some of the bands he loves. “When we would mention bands from New Jersey to One Win Choice, they would say, ‘Oh yeah, we played with them several times,’ and we’re like, ‘Whoa, cool!’ ” Herzog said. The band’s live show also displays characteristics of a hardcore/punk show, most notably with the members’ high energy while performing. Rebar hasn’t had the chance to see them live, but checked out online videos of their live shows, she said. “I’ve seen videos of them, and they’re incredible,” Rebar said. “I think people are going to be completely impressed with what they’re doing. It’s very energetic and very entertaining. They get the crowd involved; you can’t ignore them.”
