Student group auctions dates with PSU athletes

For every $10 bid on a date with Penn State swimmer Basil Kaaki, he promised to remove an item of clothing.

By the time bids closed, Kaaki (sophomore-science) donned only a Speedo.

Kaaki was one of about 20 athletes auctioned off in the Penn State Marketing Association (PSMA) second annual Athlete Date Auction last night in Heritage Hall.

Kaaki qualified for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing earlier this week.

About 150 people attended the auction, where athletes including Penn State football players Lydell Sargeant and Tyrell Sales and members of the Penn State gymnastics, ice hockey, men's tennis, field hockey and fencing teams were auctioned off.

"A lot of the athletes came to the auction right after practice, so special thanks to them," said Kesha Mejeritski, PSMA director of sports and entertainment, who was also an emcee for the event.

PSMA also raffled off six autographed commemorative posters of football coach Joe Paterno.

"Tyrell Sales brought the posters to him and asked him to sign them for the auction, so special thanks to him," said Rob Setzman, PSMA director of community service.

The event raised over $700 for Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation.

The Lemonade Stand foundation is dedicated to finding a cure for childhood cancer.

"It's a great nationally known charity," Setzman (junior-marketing) said. "It's very reputable, and it's a great cause."

The club set up its own lemonade stand on one side of the room where donations were accepted for lemonade and cookies.

Stripping was a prominent theme throughout the event, as Penn State wrestler Phil Davis removed his shirt and jeans to reveal his singlet.

He then challenged the gymnastics team to a split competition.

Setzman said he thought everybody seemed to be having fun.

"It went very well," Setzman said. "We had about the same amount of people as last year, so we hope to continue the tradition in the future," he added.
