Creamery prepares as busy weekend approaches

For some, Blue-White weekend signifies tailgating and the start of college football.

For others, it also means stopping for some Peachy Paterno or WPSU Coffee Break ice cream at the Berkey Creamery, the nation's largest university creamery.

The Creamery, which will be featured on the History Channel's Modern Marvels: The Science of Ice Cream on June 23, serves ice cream and other products to almost 2,000 customers daily.

But when Blue-White weekend rolls around, the Creamery sees a 50-percent increase in customers, serving almost 3,000 customers each day of the weekend, said James Brown, assistant manager of Creamery operations.

"The Blue and White game is the beginning of spring, good weather and the time to eat more ice cream," Brown said.

With so many football fans and frequenters of the Creamery in town for the weekend, the ice cream hot spot must be ready for the ice cream blitz.

To prepare for the large influx of customers, the Creamery increases the production of its ice cream mix and orders larger amounts of necessary supplies.

For example, the Creamery orders 30 cases of sticky buns from The Diner, 126 W. College Ave., in preparation for the influx of visitors and, therefore, business during the weekend.

The Creamery also triples its stocking of all products in the store and doubles its employee staff, Brown said.

"For the Blue and White game, it's a big build up to it, as we get stocked and pumped up for the weekend," said Shannon Clymer (sophomore-human development and family studies), a Creamery employee.

Student employees are expected to work one shift of the weekend spanning from Friday to Sunday.

Doubling the amount of employees and customers in the Creamery makes for a hectic environment.

"It's a controlled chaos," Brown said. "There are so many people here that the normal person would walk in and think, 'How am I going to get this and that?' " Brown said.

On the days of Blue-White weekend, the Creamery sells 2,500 to 3,000 ice cream cones, compared to its average daily cone sales of 1,500 to 2,000, Brown said.

"For us as employees, it just comes down to trying to serve as many customers as fast as possible," said Marek Kolinski (freshman-supply chain and information systems), a Creamery employee.

A visit to the Creamery during any football game -- especially the Blue-White game -- can prove to be insane with lines streaming down Curtin Road and hundreds of people gathered to cheer on the Nittany Lions.

But with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, the Creamery provides a spirited atmosphere for Blue-White weekend.

"If you are going to get ice cream, you enjoy it and that's it," Brown said, "but if you are going to the Creamery, you get that, plus enjoying the atmosphere and the people."
