Sparks, Caillat, Flo Rida headed for PSU

This month, Penn State students will be able to "get low" to the sounds of Flo Rida, come up for "air" with American Idol winner Jordin Sparks and "crinkle their nose" alongside pop artist Colbie Caillat.

Each will be making a State College visit in the coming weeks.

Flo Rida and Sparks will be performing together at 7:30 p.m. April 20, the Sunday following the spring Blue-White game, in the Bryce Jordan Center. Tickets will go on sale at noon Thursday for Penn State students and at 10 a.m. Friday for the public, said Bernie Punt, the BJC's public relations director.

Tickets are $20 for students with Penn State ID and $37.50 for the public.

Caillat will perform a private show for Penn State students in Alumni Hall at the HUB-Robeson Center at 11 p.m. April 24. Caillat will take the stage following a performance by opening act Jason Reeves at 10 p.m., said Michelle Garcia, Caillat's public relations representative.

Garcia said ticket prices for Caillat's show have not yet been determined.

Meanwhile, Punt said the late announcement of the Sparks and Flo Rida show had nothing to do with the cancellation of the Fergie performance that was supposed to take place that same weekend.

"The two performances are not related, but it is an amazing coincidence," Punt said. "This didn't happen overnight. We'd been working on getting this show together for months, but it just happened to be finalized at the last minute."

Several students said they would prefer seeing Sparks instead of Fergie.

"I love Jordin Sparks. I like her better anyway," Allison Rago (junior-nursing) said.

Sparks' post-American Idol fame has been achieved on the strength of hit "Tattoo," and her current single, "No Air," a collaboration with R&B singer Chris Brown. Sparks will be the second American Idol winner to visit Penn State in April, after Carrie Underwood performs at the BJC along with Keith Urban on April 12.

Flo Rida topped the Billboard charts with his single "Get Low," featuring T-Pain.

In addition to the Bryce Jordan Center, tickets for the Sparks and Flo Rida show will be available at the HUB-Robeson Center, Eisenhower Auditorium and Penn State Tickets Downtown, 146 S. Allen St.

Punt said while the combination of pop singer Sparks and rapper Flo Rida is bringing together two different music styles, he thinks Penn State students will enjoy both acts.

"It'll be interesting. It will be an unusual pairing, but I think it will be successful," he said.

Caillat has achieved pop success with her popular first single "Bubbly." Students were also excited to hear Caillat will be performing this month.

"Oh yeah, I would definitely go see her," said Jessica Topper (sophomore-communications sciences and disorders). "I've known about her music since last year. I really like her style."
