Rev. leads rally for family values

Just a few hundred yards away from the Pride Commitment Ceremony at HUB Alumni Hall Saturday, Rev. Gary Dull led a rally championing family values in front of Old Main.

Dull, the senior pastor at Faith Baptist Church of Altoona, said the rally's intent was not to be a "picket or demonstration" but to "stand up for the values that make the family great."

Five speakers, including Dull, spoke about the importance of marriage between one man and one woman. "We have come here today to stand, protect and defend one man and one woman marriage," said Diane Gramley, president of the American Family Association of Pennsylvania.

"No group, whatever the size, has the right to redefine marriage," Gramley said.

Paul Schenck, president of Faith and Action -- In the Nation's Capitol, shared the same sentiment.

"The power of a man and a woman will overcome every obstacle," Schenck said.

Dull talked about supporting Senate Bill 1250-Marriage Protection Amendment.

"If we continue to sit back, we will see more of these [same-sex] ceremonies ... we will see the demise of this great nation," Dull said.

He then outlined five guidelines for what followers should do after the rally and in the world. He said people must commit to defending biblical principles in family life, pray for the family in crisis and speak up for the traditional family.

Furthermore, people must confess the personal and national sin of allowing the family to deteriorate, and ultimately, remember that God will forgive all who come to him in faith, Dull said. "Homosexuality, adultery and fornication are all sins, but they can be overcome through Christ," he said. There were about 50 people in attendance during the rally, including 11-year-old Abigail Patton of Bellwood, Pa., who said she expected a lot of speeches and praying at the rally. "I feel that we should obey the Bible," Patton said.

In opposition to the Family Values Rally, a group of about 50 people walked from the reception at the HUB to Old Main lawn carrying a large rainbow flag with their mouths duct-taped shut in silent protest.
