Judge grants petition for former player

A Centre County judge granted a petition Friday to allow a former Penn State football player to hire a private investigator with county funds to defend himself from assault charges.

Navorro Bowman, a former linebacker for the Nittany Lions, is charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, disorderly conduct and harassment and stalking in connection with an October fight at the HUB-Robeson Center. His attorney filed a petition earlier this month seeking county funds to retain a private investigator, writing that Bowman is a full-time student "without employment or assets sufficient enough to engage the services of investigators." Centre County Judge Pamela Ruest granted Bowman $500 in financial assistance to hire the private investigator.

Man steals car, returns it, police say

A man stole a car from a local delivery driver early yesterday morning only to return the car shortly thereafter, the State College Police Department said.

After a delivery driver from Wings Over Happy Valley, 536 Westerly Parkway, made a delivery to Beaver Terrace, 456 E. Beaver Ave., early yesterday morning, an individual took his vehicle and drove it back to the parking lot at Wings over Happy Valley. The driver's co-workers saw this and chased the individual, who was identified but not charged, police said.

PSUTXT to be tested system-wide

PSUTXT will be tested today system-wide to determine its effectiveness and to raise program awareness.

The test is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. and will affect between 38,000 to 39,000 subscribers to the campus alert system.

Penn State spokeswoman Annemarie Mountz, who oversees PSUTXT, said administrators hope today's test will encourage more students to register for the alert program.

Mountz said the test should help people realize if they have not completely validated their memberships to the service. She added that many students have begun to register for the program, but have not fully completed the registration process.

The system has already been used this year to alert subscribers of class delays and the water turbidity warning, for example. To subscribe to PSUTXT, visit http://newswires.psu.edu/ and click on the "PSUTXT REGISTER" button at the bottom of the page to follow further instruction.
