Officials prep for visits

With the recent influx of political speakers in State College, officials are preparing for heightened levels of security around campus.

Penn State Police said they had a limited role in security preparations for both yesterday's speech by former President Bill Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama's visit on Sunday.

"When it comes to security for both the former president and the potential presidential candidates, the Secret Service is in charge of that," Penn State Police Assistant Chief Clifford Lutz said. "They let us know their needs and requests, and we try to accommodate them."

Lutz would not comment on specifics of the approach to security as per the Secret Service's request, he said.

For Obama's speech Sunday, attendees can secure a preferred viewing ticket at the campaign headquarters downtown or at the HUB-Robeson Center. Those with preferred viewing tickets will be subject to extra security, including metal detectors, Lutz said.

According to Penn State Live, no bags will be allowed at the event. In addition, attendees are being asked to limit any personal belongings.

The approach to security for the event will be different because the event is being held outdoors, Lutz said, but he would not comment on the specifics of the differences.

Other Obama campaign events have attracted up to 30,000 people per speech. The Old Main lawn holds as many as 25,000 people, Lutz said.

"It'd be interesting to see how many [people] we get," he said. "He certainly does generate a lot of interest."
