Women's Track and Field

Bad forecast, lack of interest cancels meet

Shavon Greaves had been hoping to get on a track to forget about her seventh-place finish in the 200-meter dash at the Big Ten indoor track and field championships.

Her opportunity will have to wait yet another weekend. Possible poor weather conditions and a lack of interest from other colleges resulted in Penn State canceling the Jim Thorpe Invitational, which had been scheduled for Saturday.

"I'm a little disappointed," Greaves said. "Then when I look at the weather and stuff, I was like, 'I don't think I want to run in the cold and rain.' "

Saturday's conditions are expected to be partly sunny with a high of 43 degrees. However, rain is predicted for both Friday and Monday.

Kent State and St. Francis, the only two schools who expressed an interest in coming, decided they would only send partial teams to the meet.

Minimal interest and questionable weather made head coach Beth Alford-Sullivan's choice an easy one.

"We're disappointed, but it's not unusual," she said. "This meet has a history of being canceled and becoming a practice session anyway. It's always a tricky and touchy weekend for us."

She added that the meet had been canceled "at least once" in her nine years at Penn State.

This weekend will be the fourth consecutive one without competition for some members of the track team. A handful of athletes competed at the NCAA championships March 14-15, but a majority haven't competed since the Big Ten championships March 1-2.

Penn State is scheduled to travel to Oregon next weekend, but the lengthy layoff doesn't concern Alford-Sullivan.

"Our season is just beginning with next weekend," she said. "This is not a problem at all."

Penn State's first and final home outdoor meet of the year will be May 10.
