Game benefits impaired

Correction appended

Red, blue and yellow rubber balls whizzed back and forth as yells and cheers echoed through the Acacia fraternity basement during yesterday evening's Acacia and Delta Zeta Dodge It.

The dodgeball tournament, held at Acacia fraternity, 234 Locust Lane, was a philanthropy event to benefit the speech and hearing impaired through Painted Turtle, Delta Zeta sorority President Hillary Gupta (senior-business) said.

Twenty-two fraternities and sororities participated in the event, which was sponsored by 180 Degree Orange Citrus Blast. There were separate brackets for the men's and women's teams.

"We used to do a tug-of-war, but we decided to do a dodgeball tournament to get more people to show up," Delta Zeta sorority member Alex Williott (senior-advertising) said. "It's lots of effort to organize because of sponsors."

The entire event took two months of planning, Delta Zeta Philanthropy Chair Beka Paolino (sophomore-education) said. The alumni of Acacia fraternity helped out a lot by paying for signs and taking care of other needs, she said.

"We did lots of advertising ... it was hard to get sponsors," Paolino said.

They also provided some basic finger foods like chips and dip to "keep the winning teams around," she said.

The men's games were much shorter in duration and the balls flew with more speed and force, though both groups displayed high levels of enthusiasm.

First place winners were awarded gift certificates to Chili's Grill and Bar, 137 S. Allen St., the second place teams won certificates to Panera Bread, 148 S. Allen St., and third place won a case of the sponsor's energy drinks.

During a game in the first round, a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority won a one-on-one sudden death match.

"I knew I had to take the first shot," winner Lindsey Steck (freshman-advertising) said. "It was really hard."

After an intense match between Theta Delta Chi fraternity, 305 E. Prospect Ave., and Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity, 425 Locust Lane, the latter organization triumphed.

"I felt great," Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity member Bill Monks (freshman-accounting) said. "I put in lots of practice, hours and hours. I like doing philanthropy to help out."

Ultimately the winning dodgeball teams were from Phi Mu Delta fraternity, 500 S. Allen St., and Delta Gamma sorority.

On the backs of the event T-shirts read a quote from the movie Dodgeball: "If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball."

This article gives the incorrect address for Phi Mu Delta fraternity. The fraternity is located at 251 S. Pugh St.
