Commitment ceremonies a sign of change at PSU

Kudos to the four brave gay and lesbian couples preparing to publicly affirm their commitment to each other this weekend.

How sad that anti-gay forces -- so-called "Christians" -- are planning to protest the happy event. We need more out and proud gay people, living honest lives to counter the destructiveness of those whom would see us all back in the closet.

As gay PSU alum, I remember all too well struggling to sort out my sexual orientation in a rural setting with few social outlets. It wasn't easy for me to be gay at Penn State, but I am thrilled to see that times have changed.

To the couples: Congratulations and thank you for your visibility. To gays on campus: Don't let a few anti-gay protesters discourage you. As activist Frank Kameny so aptly put it: Gay is good. We should all follow the example set by these eight members of the State College community and live our lives openly, honestly and without fear.

For those struggling with issues related to sexual orientation, visit the LGBTA Student Resource Center in 101 Boucke.
