Teachers, students exhibit art works

Normally, the instructors at the Center for Arts and Crafts are accustomed to focusing on the artwork of their students, but currently, the spotlight is squarely on their own work.

The instructors' work is now on display in the Center for Arts and Crafts Artists and Instructors Exhibition in the HUB-Robeson Center through April 27.

The Center for Arts and Crafts is a "Penn State organization located in the Grange Building that provides noncredit art classes for students and community members," said Bethany Van Velsor, the HUB-Robeson Galleries publicist.

She said the exhibit is giving the people who teach the classes -- whose students can range from young kids to adults -- a chance to exhibit their own work.

Van Velsor said the majority of pieces in the exhibition can be found in Art Alley while some of the larger sculptures will be featured in the showcases, both of which are on the first floor of the HUB.

The exhibition features a variety of mixed media, including photographs, paintings, drawings and sculptures.

"I think there's a lot of variety. Some of it is considered fine art, but there is also art typical of what we offer here at the Center," Stephanie Gush, director of the Center for Arts and Crafts said, adding that the exhibition also includes pieces such as jewelry and handmade books.

Gush said the exhibition features the work of 23 artists.

"Most of them are instructors," she said.

"But there are also works from people associated with the Center for Arts and Crafts and a few students that have taken classes here."

Gush said some of the instructors at the center are also students.

"A lot of it is student work," she said, "so I think it's really important to showcase that."

Gush said most of the center's student instructors are art education majors, like Kelly Borra (junior-art education), an instructor at the center who said she entered a copper sculpture into the exhibition.

Borra said the show is a great opportunity for artists to display their work.

"It's nice to have different pieces of work shown in the HUB," she said. "It's good to have art displayed between students and professional artists."

Borra said she got involved with the center after seeing fliers and signs around campus.

"I saw they needed instructors for the summer camps, so I applied and got the job," she said.

She added that she has plans to work the camps again during the summer.

Borra touted the Center for Arts and Crafts as a good creative outlet for students,

"I think that for any students that are interested in art that aren't art majors, it's a pretty good resource and [the classes] aren't that expensive," she said.

Gush said students can register for art classes for spring, summer and fall semesters in 11A Grange Building.
