Local bands to play '80s night at Brewery

The birth of many heavy metal and hardcore punk bands arose at the beginning of the 1980s, and this influence will be making its mark in State College tonight.

Beginning at 9:30 p.m., '80s Night at The Brewery, 233 E. Beaver Ave., will feature Pennsylvania-based bands The Scraps, Hollywood Babylon and the Barroom Pirates.

"I'm really excited about this show," Cherry Darling promoter Meredith Rebar said. "Since it's an '80s theme, people are encouraged to dress up in their '80s gear and enjoy some really good music."

The Scraps is a straight-up punk band from Hollidaysburg and has been together since 2003. Marty Scrap, lead vocalist, said the band is significantly influenced by bands like the Ramones and the Queers. The band's recently-completed new record, Therapy for Retards, which features 14 songs, can be purchased at their shows or on their MySpace.com account.

"The Scraps have a really fun, really fast punk rock sound," Rebar said. "Their songs are all less than a minute-and-a-half long, and their act tonight is going to be a fun 30 minutes."

Also on the lineup for tonight is Hollywood Babylon, a heavy metal band influenced by Motley Crue, Guns N' Roses and Poison.

The members of the band are all Penn State students and have only been together for about three-and-a-half months. This will be their third show playing for Cherry Darling Productions, Rebar said.

"We're trying to bring back rock 'n' roll," said Angel Valentine, lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist.

"We get rave responses from people because when people go out to bars and places, they like to have fun -- not just hear a bunch of emo songs."

Barroom Pirates, another punk band from State College, has been together since October 2005.

Rebar said the Barroom Pirates focus more on rhythm than just speed and are influenced by bands like the Clash, Rancid and Bad Religion.

"We're looking forward to playing with Hollywood Babylon since we've done a show with them before, and it was a good time," said Johnny Counselman, guitarist and vocalist. "Tonight's going to be a fun time at a good bar with awesome music,

and it's a cool way to meet new people."
