'Sour grapes' can't fix football program

It seems that The Daily Collegian has a case of sour grapes regarding Terrelle Pryor's decision to play for Ohio State University. If Pryor chose Penn State, The Daily Collegian would publish an opinion column claiming that he made the right choice. Since he chose Ohio State, they bash Pryor's character and claim that he wouldn't be a good fit for the team.

Being a quarterback at Penn State is a death sentence for any player with NFL aspirations. We haven't had a full-time quarterback drafted since 1997 when Wally Richardson was picked in the 7th round. He threw a grand total of two passes in his NFL career.

The fact is that Pryor made the right decision by playing at Ohio State and we should all respect that choice.

Class of 2007

You say that Pryor would not be a good fit for Penn State football because of his antics. It was my understanding that coaches are to help mold young 18-year-olds like Pryor into not only good players, but mature and responsible members of the community.

Let's be real, we needed Pryor just to make our recruiting class this year even halfway respectable. Why would a recruit like him come here with our coaching situation as unstable as it is? Is it so hard to ask for a succession plan like the one Florida State has for Bobby Bowden? I think recruits would be more comfortable if they knew whom they would be playing under after JoePa leaves.

What hurts me the most is that we seem to be fine with our mediocrity. With the exception of 2006, we haven't been pulling in top 10 recruiting classes and Michigan and Ohio State consistently outrank us. Letting one of the most highly touted recruits in Pennsylvania history get away from us is unacceptable.

We are at a crucial point where a player like Pryor could have made us a big contender on the national stage. Now we must settle for beating teams like Temple and losing to Michigan. At this rate, we should consider ourselves lucky that we don't have to play USC like Ohio State must next season -- although their chances improve ever so slightly now that they have Pryor.
