When the best players in Division I hockey meet in Happy Valley for the inaugural ACHA All-Star game, there will be three familiar faces behind the bench.
Penn State will send junior goaltender Nick Signet, senior defenseman Keith Jordan and head coach Scott Balboni to represent the Icers. The game will be played at 7:30 p.m. next Saturday at the Greenberg Ice Pavilion.
The honor of hosting the inaugural event was given to Penn State after it was considered the central location and thought to make the most sense of three finalists, Balboni said.
"It's a great honor to be selected to host the first game of its kind," Balboni said. "The guys will have a lot of fun, and the fans can enjoy watching great players from all around the country they're not used to seeing."
One player Icers fans are used to seeing is Signet.
This year was Signet's first as the No. 1 goaltender and he excelled by collecting 20 victories, a 1.66 goals against average and a .926 save percentage. These statistics led to him being a unanimous selection for the all-star game.
"Keith and I feel very privileged to have made the team because so many of our teammates could have made it also," Signet said. "It's going to be a different atmosphere playing for fun, and it will be a great experience competing with all the other talented players."
Jordan was the Icers co-captain this year and helped his team reach the national championship in three of his four seasons. A native of State College, Jordan will have a chance for one last collegiate game in front of his hometown fans.
Despite missing seven games because of injury, Jordan led all Icer defensemen in points with 34, finishing sixth on the team.
Forty players from 32 different teams were selected for the game. Penn State was one of only eight schools to have two player representatives.
Delaware coach Mike DeAngelis and Balboni drafted their teams from the pool of 40 committee-selected players. Balboni drafted both Signet and Jordan.
Balboni said no systems or plays will be added, but rather the players would just go out and get to display their talent.
"It's pretty cool getting one last home game because our last one with Stony Brook was canceled," Signet said.
"It gives us one more chance to play in front of our fans that have been great all season."
