Wrestling finishes 7th at Big Tens, qualifies six for nationals

The Penn State wrestling team finished seventh at the Big Ten championships Sunday in Minneapolis, but still qualified six wrestlers for the NCAA championships.

The Nittany Lions finished the tournament with 84.5 team points, one behind Wisconsin. More than a quarter of Penn State's team points came from 197-pounder Phil Davis, who beat No. 1-seeded Mike Tamillow of Northwestern, 3-2 for the 197-pound title. Tamillow upset Davis earlier in the year, 6-1.

Dan Vallimont was the runner-up in the 157-pound bracket. Vallimont lost to Illinois' Michael Poeta, 8-2.

Garrett Scott (141-pounds), 149-pounder Bubba Jenkins, 165-pounder Dave Rella and 184-pounder Phil Bomberger also qualified for the NCAA tournament by finishing in the top-7 at Big Tens.
