Jazz band to perform tonight

Swing music will transform Esber Recital Hall into a relaxed jazz club tonight when Inner and Outer Dimensions take the stage.

The two student jazz groups will perform at 8 p.m. in the concert hall of Music Building I.

Inner Dimensions will begin its portion of the concert with a song featuring vocalist Sarah Holgate (senior-piano), the first vocal performance for the group this year.

Inner Dimensions Director Mac Himes said the song he chose, "Our Love Is Here to Stay" by George Gershwin, seemed like a natural fit for Holgate when the group rehearsed with her for the first time.

"She's a really great vocalist, so she knows exactly what to do, and it came together pretty well," he said.

Holgate studies voice with School of Music professor Mary Saunders in addition to her piano major. She also regularly performs downtown with the Andrew Jackson Jazz Showcase at Bar Bleu, 144 S. Garner St.

Holgate said she has been familiar with "Our Love Is Here to Stay" since she first heard Harry Connick Jr.'s version when she was 13 years old.

She said that the song has a laid-back swing feeling and conveys a positive message.

"Many things in life can change, but love is here to stay," Holgate said of the song's theme.

Himes said he tried to choose original arrangements from famous bands for the concert, rather than using songs that were arranged especially for college bands.

The arrangement of the song "Peanut Vendor," originally performed by the Stan Kenton Band, challenges the brass section, Himes said.

The band will also perform an original version of the song "Get Up and Go" written by Sammy Nestico, famous for his work with bandleader Count Basie.

Outer Dimensions Director Steven Thomas (graduate-music performance) said the songs he chose for tonight's concert all fall under the basic definition of swing music.

"The music has the emphasis more on the back beat," Thomas said. "Classical music is more straight forward."

Outer Dimensions will also perform "Big Swing Face," a song made famous by Stan Kenton and his band, in addition to three other songs in a similar style.

Admission to the event is free.
