Students bring faith with 'prayer-Thons'

Members of the Campus Crusade for Christ brought Bibles to Thon to pray for the dancers and children.

There's the main Thon; there are high school mini-Thons; and, for members of Campus Crusade for Christ (CRU), there are "prayer-Thons."

Members of the on-campus organization were present during all 46 hours of the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon this weekend.

"A lot of us brought Bibles ... " James Kennedy (junior-computer engineering) said.

Members of CRU kept at least one student praying for everyone involved in Thon during all 46 hours of the event.

Nicole Wahlberg (senior-marketing) said that the students were praying for the dancers and for the kids.

"We can have as many as 20 kids praying at one time," Wahlberg said.

CRU member Emneris Domenech (senior-criminal justice), a frequent attendee of the prayer-Thon, said she had been there for the better part of the weekend.

"It's really exciting to see how God works," Domenech said. "[Our dancers are] happy we're up here praying for them."

Another student who incorporated his faith into the weekend was John Mahoney (senior-business), a dancer from Pi Lambda Phi fraternity, 321 Fraternity Row.

He had his moraler make him a sign to hold up that read "Praying + Donating," with the plus sign resembling a cross.

He said he hopes that Thon will form a prayer committee in the future -- in addition to the other 14 committees Thon currently has -- that could meet and offer prayers for Thon.

"I really believe in the power of group prayer," Mahoney said.

"We could see a lot more miracles."

Mahoney's fraternity's slogan is "Keep the Faith."

He pointed out that when the initials are reversed, the letters "FTK" -- symbolizing For the Kids -- are formed.

"Coincidence?" Mahoney said. "I think not."
